Description

A spellbinding dessert featuring a dense, dark chocolate cake that is moist and indulgently sweet, perfect for any Halloween gathering.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed)
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee (hot)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (pure)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or one 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the white sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients, then pour in the hot coffee, buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Using an electric mixer, beat the mixture on medium speed for about 2 minutes until combined.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and tap gently on the counter.
  6. Bake for 30–40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then invert to cool completely on a wire rack.
  8. Frost with your favorite buttercream or chocolate ganache and decorate as desired.

Notes

This cake can be stored at room temperature for a couple of days or frozen for up to three months.
