- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed)
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup strong brewed coffee (hot)
- 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (pure)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or one 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the white sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients, then pour in the hot coffee, buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
- Using an electric mixer, beat the mixture on medium speed for about 2 minutes until combined.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and tap gently on the counter.
- Bake for 30–40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then invert to cool completely on a wire rack.
- Frost with your favorite buttercream or chocolate ganache and decorate as desired.
Notes
This cake can be stored at room temperature for a couple of days or frozen for up to three months.
