Description

A luscious dessert that combines sweet orange and creamy vanilla flavors, reminiscent of a nostalgic creamsicle, perfect for gatherings and celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Cooking spray
  • 2 boxes of white cake mix (plus ingredients called for on the box)
  • 1 (3.4 oz) box of orange Jell-O
  • 4 cups (8 sticks) of butter, softened
  • 13 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup of whole milk (plus more if needed)
  • Orange food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line three 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper and grease with cooking spray.
  2. Prepare cake mixes according to package instructions and fold in orange Jell-O. Divide batter among pans and bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely.
  3. In a large bowl, beat softened butter with half of the powdered sugar until smooth. Gradually add remaining powdered sugar and milk, mixing until fluffy, adding more milk as needed.
  4. Level the tops of the cooled cakes using a serrated knife. Place the first layer on a serving plate, frost, and repeat with remaining layers.
  5. Apply a crumb coat with about 1 1/2 cups of frosting and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  6. Divide remaining frosting into four bowls, dye with orange food coloring for different shades, and place in pastry bags.
  7. Pipe the frosting onto the cake in concentric circles, starting with bright orange to light orange to white on top.
  8. Smooth the outside of the cake with a metal bench scraper while ensuring colors stay in place.
  9. Pipe decorative stars around the perimeter with leftover frosting.
  10. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

If you have leftovers, wrap tightly and freeze for later enjoyment. Use low-sugar cake mix for a lighter option.
