Description
A simple and delicious homemade naan recipe that is warm, fluffy, and perfect for pairing with your favorite dishes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
- Optional toppings: 2 tablespoons melted butter, 1-2 cloves minced garlic, fresh chopped cilantro
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add yogurt, oil, and yeast mixture. Stir to form a shaggy dough.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 6-8 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball and flatten into ovals about 1/4 inch thick.
- Heat a dry cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook one naan at a time for 1-2 minutes per side, or until bubbles form and golden spots appear.
- Brush warm naan with melted butter or garlic oil. Garnish with garlic or cilantro if desired. Serve warm.
Notes
For garlic naan, sprinkle minced garlic on top after cooking. To bake instead, use a preheated 500°F oven with a pizza stone for 3-5 minutes. You can freeze cooked naan in zip-top bags for up to 2 months.
