Description

A spooky-sweet twist on a sacred tradition, this enchanting bread features flavors of orange and anise perfect for Halloween gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¼ cup warm water (110°F)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 2 tsp anise seed (or ½ tsp anise extract)
  • 1¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • 2 tsp orange zest
  • 2 tbsp white sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk and butter in a small pan over medium heat until melted.
  2. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, sugar, anise seeds, yeast, and salt. Stir in the warm milk mixture along with beaten eggs and orange zest.
  3. Gradually add in the remaining flour, kneading the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 to 2 hours.
  5. After the first rise, gently punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  6. Allow it to rise again for another hour.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F and bake for 35 to 45 minutes until golden brown.
  8. For the glaze, boil together the orange juice, orange zest, and white sugar for 2 minutes before brushing it over the warm bread.

Notes

For a healthier option, use low-sugar orange juice, experiment with whole wheat flour, or substitute dairy with almond or coconut milk.
