Description

A spooktacular delight combining rich chocolate and vanilla cake layers enveloped in pumpkin spice buttercream and drizzled with chocolate ganache, perfect for Halloween gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Cooking spray, for pans
  • 1 box Devil’s Food cake mix, plus ingredients called for on box
  • 1 box vanilla cake mix, plus ingredients called for on box
  • 2 cups (4 sticks) butter, softened
  • 7 cups powdered sugar, divided
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp. pumpkin spice
  • Orange food coloring
  • 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • Ghost Peeps
  • Milano cookies
  • Oreos, crushed
  • Candy corn
  • Candy pumpkins
  • Sprinkles
  • Candy eyeballs

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and spray four 9-inch cake pans with cooking spray.
  2. In two large bowls, prepare both chocolate and vanilla cake batters according to box instructions.
  3. Divide the batter among prepared pans, placing two chocolate and two vanilla pans.
  4. Bake until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, approximately 30 minutes. Transfer pans to a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. For the frosting: Beat together softened butter and half of the powdered sugar until smooth. Beat in the milk, vanilla, pumpkin spice, and the remaining powdered sugar until fluffy. Add orange food coloring to achieve desired hue.
  6. For the ganache: In a small saucepan over low heat, heat the heavy cream just until it bubbles. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate chips and whisk until smooth.
  7. Assemble the cake: Level each layer with a serrated knife, then layer chocolate and vanilla with frosting in between. Coat the exterior with remaining frosting and drizzle ganache over the top.
  8. Decorate with ghost Peeps, Milano cookies for tombstones, crushed Oreos for dirt, and top with sprinkles, candy corn, pumpkins, and candy eyeballs.
