Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk, warmed to about 100°F (38°C)
- 6 Tablespoons (75g) granulated sugar, divided
- 1 Tablespoon (9g) active dry or instant yeast
- 5 Tablespoons (71g) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 Tablespoons (30ml) freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1 Tablespoon fresh orange zest
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups (530g) bread flour, plus more for rolling
- 6 Tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, softened for filling
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 Tablespoon fresh orange zest for filling
- 1 and 1/4 cups (150g) confectioners’ sugar for icing
- 3 Tablespoons (45ml) freshly squeezed orange juice for icing
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a stand mixer bowl, whisk together the warm milk, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add remaining sugar, softened butter, orange juice, orange zest, eggs, salt, and 1 cup of flour to the yeast mixture. Beat on medium speed for 1 minute until well combined.
- Gradually incorporate remaining flour until a soft dough forms. Knead for 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Lightly grease a bowl, place the dough in it, cover with a towel, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Grease a baking dish. Punch down the dough gently, roll into a rectangle measuring 10×16 inches on a floured surface.
- Spread softened butter on rolled-out dough. Mix filling ingredients and sprinkle evenly over the buttered dough.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log, slice into 12 equal pieces, and arrange in the greased baking dish. Let rise again for 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Bake rolls for 25-28 minutes until golden brown.
- For icing, whisk together confectioners’ sugar, orange juice, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Drizzle icing over warm rolls and serve fresh out of the oven.
Notes
Make sure the milk is not too hot to avoid killing the yeast. You can prepare the dough the night before and refrigerate it.
