Description
A delectable dish featuring golden, flaky pastry filled with sautéed mushrooms, garlic, and Gruyère cheese, perfect for any cozy dinner or festive gathering.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 ounces button mushrooms, sliced
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and sauté the chopped onion for about 5 minutes until soft and translucent.
- Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional minute, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- Integrate the sliced mushrooms into the skillet and sprinkle with thyme, salt, and black pepper. Cook for about 8-10 minutes, until the mushrooms are browned and moisture has evaporated. Remove the mixture from heat and let it cool slightly.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry into a rectangle approximately 10×14 inches.
- Cut slits about 1 inch apart along the longer sides of the pastry to create a tick-tack-toe pattern while leaving a strip in the center for the filling.
- Spoon the mushroom mixture down the center of the pastry, and top it with shredded Gruyère cheese.
- To create a braid, fold the pastry strips over the filling, alternating sides to create a beautiful braid. Press the ends to seal.
- Brush the top of the pastry braid with the beaten egg (egg wash) to ensure a golden-brown finish while baking.
- Transfer the braid to the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before slicing and serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding lemon juice or zest to the filling, or try incorporating spinach or caramelized onions.
