Description

A vibrant and spooky Halloween Layer Cake that dazzles with rich flavors and colors, making it a festive treat for any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup butter (room temperature)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 23 drops each: electric orange, electric green, electric purple, super black gel paste colors
  • 16 oz cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 1 cup butter (room temperature)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Super black gel paste color
  • Black sanding sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a half-sheet pan with parchment paper or prepare loaf pans for layering.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing in vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Alternate adding the dry mix and buttermilk into the wet ingredients until combined.
  4. Divide the batter evenly into 4 bowls and add gel coloring to each for vibrant layers. Stir until colors are fully mixed.
  5. Spread each colored batter into the prepared pans evenly and bake for 18 minutes. Test for doneness with a toothpick.
  6. Cool layers completely before frosting.
  7. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until light and fluffy. Add black gel dye to desired color.
  8. Trim cake layers for even stacking. Assemble the cake starting with black, followed by purple, orange, and green layers, spreading frosting in between.
  9. Chill the assembled cake overnight to set the layers.
  10. Frost the entire cake with the black cream cheese frosting and coat with black sanding sugar.
  11. Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

Chilling the cake overnight allows flavors to meld beautifully. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.
